Vanraj Shastri is an Indian sarangi player and vocalist from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, rooted in the Hindustani classical tradition. He is known for bringing the deeply expressive sound of the sarangi into both classical and contemporary cross-cultural contexts.
He began his musical training at a young age with Indian classical vocals and tabla before fully dedicating himself to sarangi, an instrument known for its human-like vocal quality. Vanraj has performed widely across India and internationally, including European tours and major collaborative projects. He is part of the neo-classical ensemble ARAJ, led by tabla virtuoso Ishaan Ghosh, alongside musicians such as S. Akash, Pratik Singh and Mehtab Ali Niazi, blending Hindustani classical music with contemporary and global influences.
His work includes collaborations with leading Indian artists and composers such as Salim–Sulaiman, Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain, as well as contributions to film and recording projects including Bollywood and international fusion productions.
Highlights of his career include performances at major venues and festivals in India and Europe, participation in cross-cultural projects such as Playing For Change, and recognition in national competitions including the All India Radio circuit.
Vanraj’s music bridges tradition and innovation, preserving the emotional depth of the sarangi while expanding its voice into contemporary global music.
